Positively Women's History

When was the charity set up?

Positively Women was established in 1987 by a group of women living with HIV who were determined to set up services specific to women's needs. At that time there was no appropriate support service available for women living with HIV. The women were predominantly infected through injected drug use.

Today, the organisation remains strongly committed to the ethos of peer support and empowerment.

How the charity has developed

Initially a support group was formed which provided a safe space for women living with HIV to talk openly about the challenges they faced. Meeting in each others homes and then in rooms borrowed from other organisations. Members joined and the women circulated hand made fliers and advertising in clinics.

In 1990, PW leased premises in Islington official opened by Her Royal Highness Diana, the then Princess of Wales on 3 December. The organisation rapidly expanded in service provision and staff. Positively Women was registered as a charity on 27 January 1992 marking the development from a community based organisation to a key provider of HIV services.

In 1998 to 1999 PW underwent period of restructuring. PW put new approaches to service delivery in place. The organisation emerged as a confident force in the HIV field. By 2000 PW became a member of the Positive Futures partnership. Offering a wide range of services independently but work in partnership to support people with HIV to realise their potential.

PW commissioned a created a new vision statement in 2003: ‘Positively Women Living with HIV … Changing lives’.

Today, Positively Women has over 1000 registered active beneficiaries and 20 full time staff, supported by 45 volunteers and sessional workers.
