The HIV and Immigration Project is a
joint venture between Positively Women and Asylum Aid. The motivation behind the work came from the growing
number of our beneficiaries with asylum issues.
Positively Women supports over 1,000 women living with HIV every
year and a third of this group are refugees or asylum seekers.
All Positively Women case workers
working on the project have been through the asylum process
themselves.
Because of the current
political climate surrounding asylum and immigration the project has a greater focus on enabling women to cope with unwanted
outcomes of asylum appeals. We are currently developing information
packs and support for those who are more likely to be deported
i.e. those
on the Voluntary Return Programme and looking at
ways
of working with the International Community of Women
Living with
HIV/AIDS to support women on return to their
home country.
