Community involvement
The Community Involvement project empowers women living with HIV through practical work experience, mentoring and training. The project aims to increase the representation and awareness of women living with HIV.
Taking Part
The Taking Part project promotes the input of women living with HIV in forming and informing national and local policy and strategy. The programme builds skills and confidence and individuals develop their capacity to influence policy and service development. This runs in parallel with the provision of information about policy and strategic issues as well as opportunities to attend forums for discussion and analysis.
External Training
Positively Women provides training to a range of national external bodies on a series of topics relevant to women living with HIV. This makes sure the views and needs to positive women are understood by service providers. Presentations have included:
- To healthcare professionals at Radcliff Infirmary, Oxford GUM clinic on issues for African people with living with HIV in the UK;
- To midwives about personal experience of being diagnosed antenatally, at Ealing Hospital study day;
- To healthcare professionals at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary GUM clinic on issues for African people with living with HIV in the UK.
Service User Representation with HIV and Voluntary Organisations
Training and supporting women living with HIV to become Service User representatives within their voluntary organisations ensuring their voice is heard and they take the lead in determining service provision to best meet their needs.
Feedback on work so far has demonstrated success in this area: “It has made me confident. I feel I am able to express my needs and ask any questions relating to my welfare.”
We also aim to work with management in other voluntary organisations, to share our model of SU representation in order to develop this representation as integral to operations and planning.
