Children and families project

Positively Women’s Case Work Manager Beulah Gordon runs the Children and Families project. The team includes a part-time Children and Young People’s Worker, who is a qualified youth worker, a Family Support Worker and sessional workers. The project works closely with our other services aimed at supporting women and their children to live healthier lives with HIV. Currently the project works mainly with children in London, although PW maintains close links with other organisations nationwide.

The project aims to help children build up support networks and coping strategies. The project also gives children the opportunity to relax, have fun and concentrate on being children.

Services provided include:

Support for parents
Advice, advocacy and support for parents living with HIV, including: support around disclosure (who to tell about
their HIV status or that of their child, and how); social
work intervention; support in dealing with schools and
other professionals and assistance with children’s hardship grant applications.

Youth Groups
Youth groups provide opportunities for children living with HIV to educate and mentor each other. Activities include workshops on a range of topics: sexual health and relations, personal hygiene, Community Police, creative writing, dance, drama and music.

Volunteering opportunities for young people
Engaging older youth group members as peer volunteers has a very strong influence in enabling members to relate to each other and give participants a true feeling of ownership of the group. Older teens volunteer to support younger people, particularly those newly arrived from overseas countries.

Events and trips for young people
Twice a year we provides respite breaks for children. Away from home, the breaks are often the first step towards independence and access to the countryside, to experience new challenges and build new skills such as group/team work, and leadership.

Childcare for parents
A registered crèche offers respite for parents or young
carers enabling them to access our other services. Children
in the crèche also benefit from activities and build up of friendships with children in similar situations to themselves.

The Children and Family project also works specifically with children, young people, and their parents in South London.
